Mergence™ is a cutting edge, open source healthcare data integration engine.  The secure collection, transformation, and distribution of healthcare data challenges the success of all automated electronic health surveillance projects.  We designed Mergence to meet and overcome these challenges.
 
Healthcare data comes in a wide variety of formats from a broad range of sources.  These varying data sources make it difficult for public health to successfully collect and manage data.  Mergence’s multi-protocol support transparently accepts data from the most common data transmission mechanisms, allowing healthcare data providers to supply data in its native format.  Providing flexibility in the transmission of data is critical to the success of significant data collection efforts.   Mergence’s flexibility saves time and expense for both healthcare and public health.

In keeping true to our core principles, we provide Mergence as open source software.  A frequent difficulty in successfully and securely sharing healthcare data is proprietary vendor systems.  These systems often have difficulty working together and require expensive customizations to meet new needs.  Rather than creating another proprietary healthcare system, we have released Mergence as an open source project.  Mergence is freely available for public health to use and modify to meet the evolving needs of community health surveillance.

Under its technical hood, Mergence takes advantage of the latest available tools and standards.   Rather than constructing a software system that relies upon custom constructed mechanisms, Mergence relies upon proven, widely adopted open source tools.  These best of breed tools include Apache Service Mix, Spring Scripting, and Apache Mina.  The result is a robust HL7 integration engine that is fully transactional and supports hundreds of thousands of messages per day over thousands of concurrent connections.
